CPAP therapy & support
CPAP therapy and support near Durban — done properly.
CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is the most effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea. But effective CPAP requires the right pressure, the right mask, and the right ongoing support. The EEG & Snoring Clinic provides the complete CPAP pathway — from titration study to long-term follow-up.
CPAP therapy works by delivering a continuous stream of gently pressurised air through a mask worn during sleep. The air pressure acts as a pneumatic splint, keeping the upper airway open and preventing the repeated collapses that cause apnoeas, oxygen desaturations, and sleep fragmentation.
When the pressure is correctly set and the mask fits well, CPAP is transformative. Patients typically report dramatically improved energy, mood, and concentration from the very first night. Long-term, consistent CPAP use significantly reduces cardiovascular risk associated with untreated OSA.
The key word is "correctly set". A CPAP machine used at the wrong pressure — whether too low (leaving apnoeas untreated) or too high (causing discomfort and aerophagia) — delivers poor outcomes. A formal titration study ensures your therapy is optimised from the start.
Night 1
Most patients feel a difference from the first night of effective CPAP
~80%
Reduction in apnoea-hypopnoea index with properly titrated CPAP
Long-term
Cardiovascular risk significantly reduced with consistent CPAP use
What we offer
Complete CPAP support, from titration to follow-up.
We support CPAP patients at every stage — from first diagnosis to long-term therapy management.
CPAP Titration Study
An in-lab overnight study to determine your optimal CPAP pressure. A trained technologist monitors your breathing response and adjusts settings until airway obstruction is fully eliminated — so your therapy is effective from night one.
CPAP Setup & Education
We walk you through your equipment, fit your mask, and explain how to use, clean, and maintain your device. Good setup and education are the biggest predictors of long-term CPAP compliance.
Pressure Optimisation
If you are already on CPAP but feel it is not working well — or you are experiencing pressure discomfort, aerophagia, or central apnoeas — we can review your data and retitrate to optimise therapy.
BiPAP Therapy
For patients who cannot tolerate CPAP, have complex sleep apnoea, or require different pressures for inhalation and exhalation (such as those with obesity hypoventilation syndrome), BiPAP is a highly effective alternative.
Follow-up & Compliance Review
CPAP data is downloaded and reviewed at follow-up appointments. We check residual AHI, mask leak, and usage hours, and troubleshoot any issues to ensure you are getting the full benefit of therapy.
Post-Diagnosis Consultation
If you have been diagnosed with OSA elsewhere and need a second opinion, a new titration study, or ongoing support, we welcome post-diagnosis patients and work with your existing care team.
Common questions
CPAP therapy — your questions answered.
Do I need a new sleep study if I already own a CPAP machine?
Not necessarily. If you have a recent diagnosis and your machine has data logging, we can review your therapy data. If you have never had a formal titration study, we recommend one to ensure your pressure is correctly set.
Can I get CPAP equipment through the clinic?
We work with reputable CPAP equipment suppliers and can assist with referrals and recommendations. Many major medical aids fund CPAP devices when sleep apnoea is documented — we can provide the required clinical reports.
What if I cannot tolerate wearing a CPAP mask?
Mask intolerance is common initially and almost always solvable. There are dozens of mask styles — full face, nasal, nasal pillow — and our team will find the right fit for your face and breathing pattern.
Is CPAP therapy lifelong?
For most patients with OSA, CPAP is a long-term therapy. However, significant weight loss can reduce OSA severity substantially and in some cases resolve it. We monitor patients over time and reassess when circumstances change.
