Snoring treatment
Snoring treatment done properly, near Durban.
Snoring is more than a nuisance — it can be the first sign of obstructive sleep apnoea, a serious condition that raises your risk of heart disease, stroke, and accidents. At the EEG & Snoring Clinic we find out why you snore and offer the right treatment for your specific case.
Snoring occurs when airflow through a narrowed or partially obstructed upper airway causes the soft tissues of the throat to vibrate. It ranges from simple primary snoring — noisy but medically benign — to the repeated airway collapse of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), which carries significant cardiovascular risk.
Because the same symptom can have very different causes and consequences, a proper clinical assessment is essential before choosing any treatment. An oral appliance may be all that is needed for primary snoring; a patient with undiagnosed severe OSA needs CPAP — and treating them with an appliance alone would leave the underlying condition unaddressed.
Our approach: diagnose first, treat specifically. Every snoring patient at our clinic receives a full clinical history, airway evaluation, and — where indicated — an overnight sleep study before any treatment is recommended.
When snoring needs urgent assessment
- Your partner has witnessed you stopping breathing during sleep
- You wake feeling unrefreshed despite a full night in bed
- You experience unexplained morning headaches
- You feel excessively sleepy during the day or fall asleep driving
- You have hypertension that is difficult to manage
If any of these apply, book an assessment — do not wait.
Treatment options
The right treatment for your type of snoring.
We offer every evidence-based option for snoring and sleep-disordered breathing — and help you choose the one most likely to work for you.
Sleep Study & Diagnosis
Before treating snoring, we determine the cause. A home sleep test or overnight polysomnogram identifies whether obstructive sleep apnoea is present and grades its severity.
CPAP Therapy
If sleep apnoea is the driver, CPAP is the most effective treatment. A gentle stream of pressurised air keeps the airway open throughout the night, eliminating both apnoeas and snoring.
Oral Appliance Therapy
A custom-fitted mandibular advancement device (MAD) repositions the jaw to open the airway. Effective for mild-to-moderate OSA and primary snoring, and preferred by patients who cannot tolerate CPAP.
Airway Evaluation
Our specialists assess nasal passages, the soft palate, tongue, and throat anatomy to identify structural contributors to snoring and guide appropriate treatment.
ENT Referral
Where surgical evaluation is appropriate — such as for a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils, or nasal polyps — we coordinate directly with ear, nose, and throat surgeons.
Lifestyle & Positional Advice
Weight management, alcohol reduction, positional sleep therapy, and nasal decongestant strategies can meaningfully reduce snoring severity in selected patients.
