EEG & Snoring Clinic

EEG testing Durban

Expert EEG testing near Durban, on the South Coast.

The EEG & Snoring Clinic provides the full range of electroencephalography (EEG) services — from routine outpatient recordings to multi-day ambulatory and video-EEG studies — interpreted by HPCSA-accredited specialists at Hibiscus Private Hospital in Port Shepstone.

An electroencephalogram (EEG) measures the brain's electrical activity by detecting voltage fluctuations from ionic current flows within neurons. Small metal electrodes are placed on the scalp in a standardised pattern and connected to a recording device. The procedure is completely non-invasive and painless.

EEG is the primary tool for diagnosing epilepsy and classifying seizure type — which directly determines treatment choice. It is also used to investigate unexplained loss of consciousness, encephalopathy, and sleep-related neurological events, and to differentiate epileptic from non-epileptic attack disorder.

At the EEG & Snoring Clinic, every recording is performed by a trained technologist and personally reviewed and reported by our specialist — not outsourced or auto-interpreted by software.

Clinical indications

  • Suspected epilepsy or recurrent seizures
  • First unprovoked seizure
  • Unexplained loss of consciousness or blackouts
  • Non-epileptic attack disorder (NEAD) evaluation
  • Sleep-related epilepsy
  • Encephalopathy or altered mental status
  • Headache with neurological features
  • Monitoring response to anti-epileptic medication

Types of EEG we perform

The right EEG for your clinical question.

Different clinical situations call for different recording strategies. We offer the complete range.

Routine EEG

30–45 minutes

A standard waking EEG to detect abnormal electrical activity associated with epilepsy, encephalopathy, and other neurological conditions. Electrodes are placed on the scalp using a conductive gel — the procedure is completely painless.

Sleep-Deprived EEG

After restricted sleep

Patients arrive having slept for only 4–5 hours the previous night. Sleep deprivation activates seizure activity that may be absent in a routine waking record, significantly improving diagnostic yield in epilepsy.

Ambulatory EEG (24–72 hours)

24 to 72 hours

A portable EEG recorder worn at home captures brain activity across multiple natural sleep–wake cycles. Ideal for infrequent events that are unlikely to occur during a standard clinic recording.

Video-EEG

Variable

Simultaneous EEG recording and video monitoring allowing our specialists to correlate electrical brain activity with observable clinical behaviour — essential for differentiating epileptic seizures from non-epileptic events.

What to expect

Your EEG, step by step.

01

Referral & Booking

Your GP or neurologist refers you to the clinic. We confirm your appointment, provide preparation instructions, and obtain any required medical aid pre-authorisation.

02

Electrode Setup

A trained EEG technologist applies electrodes to your scalp using conductive gel. The setup takes about 20 minutes and is entirely painless.

03

Recording

You relax quietly while we record your brain's electrical activity. We may ask you to breathe deeply or look at a flashing light to activate certain patterns.

04

Specialist Reporting

Every EEG is scored and reported by our specialist. A detailed written report is sent to your referring doctor, typically within 5–7 business days.
